Marlboro College is pleased to announce that it has been designated as a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka U for its role as a leader in social innovation and changemaking in higher education. There are approximately 45 colleges and universities globally designated as Ashoka U Changemaker Campuses, and Marlboro brings its unique values of shared governance and self-designed learning to this network.
“Marlboro is pleased to be recognized among colleges and universities as an inspirational learning community and leader in social innovation,” said Kevin Quigley, Marlboro president. “This recognition is the outcome of a rigorous selection process, and we have looked forward to participating with other institutions in this amazingly innovative network.”
The Ashoka U Changemaker Campus network is a dynamic, global network of leading colleges and universities that commit to advancing social innovation and changemaking across their institution and beyond. Students, staff, administrators, faculty, and community partners in the network share inspiration, connections, and a commitment to broaden the reach and impact of social innovation and changemaking around the world.
“Institutions in this network are leaders in social innovation and social change in higher education, from curricular to co-curricular education and institutional operations,” says Kate Trzaskos, assistant dean of career education and one of the change leaders who has guided Marlboro through the designation process. “Marlboro is thrilled to be a part of this group, and sharing what we have learned through our innovative curricular design and system of shared, community governance.”
The Changemaker Campus network currently includes approximately 45 colleges and universities from around the world including Brown, UC San Diego, Arizona State University, Miami Dade College, University of Northampton, Ryerson University, Simon Fraser University, and Tecnológico de Monterrey – Campus Guadalajara.
Ashoka U is an initiative of Ashoka, the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs and changemakers. The initiative recognizes and supports colleges and universities globally that have embedded social innovation and changemaking into their programming, culture, and operations and are committed to partnering in the Changemaker Campus Network to making social innovation and changemaking a new norm across higher education.
“Increasingly, students want to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values that will enable them to contribute to positive societal change throughout their life and careers, says Marina Kim, founder and executive director of Ashoka U. “Thanks to the leadership of our Changemaker Campuses, we envision a world where millions of students are graduating as changemakers.”
According to Ashoka U officials, students need interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial, and solutions-oriented skillsets to succeed in today’s complex world that is changing at an accelerating pace. Marlboro’s self-designed curriculum and shared governance uniquely prepares students with these kinds of skills, priming them for jobs of the future.
