President Ellen Recognized by Vermont General Assembly
Vermont’s state legislature honored Marlboro College President Ellen McCulloch-Lovell earlier in March, unanimously passing H.C.R. 64 to recognize her “outstanding academic leadership and contributions to Vermont and the nation.” The resolution, sponsored by Senator Becca Balint, Senator Jeanette White, and several Windham County representatives, highlighted Ellen’s tremendous work strengthening the financial prospects and academic programs at Marlboro during her 11-year tenure. It also recognized her leadership shepherding the college through two natural disasters and engaging the surrounding community to support the local economy.
“She has been a fierce advocate for higher education, especially liberal arts education, asserting that colleges ought to prepare students for active citizenship as well as employment,” says the resolution. It also cites Ellen’s many other contributions to Vermont and the nation, including serving as Vermont Arts Council executive director, cofounding the Governor’s Institutes, serving as chief of staff to U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, and holding several senior positions in the Clinton Administration related to the arts. Ellen will be retiring from the position of Marlboro College president in June 2015.
